Constable resigns from court duties

Former constable Lloyd Davis has resigned from his position at Whitfield County Magistrate Court after transporting female inmates without authorization and doing other favors for them, District Attorney Kermit McManus said Friday.During the past year, Davis, 70, paid bonds and deposited money into the jail accounts of approximately 100 female inmates for purchases from the commissary, McManus said. There were no reports after several interviews with inmates that he got anything in return.Davis said by telephone Friday he served for five years as a constable for Whitfield County Magistrate Court and 30 years before that in the Georgia State Patrol. He said he was just trying to help the women."It was a mistake I made by trying to help people, I guess," Davis said. "That's all I have to say."McManus said employees at the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office reported some odd behavior and an unusually large number of phone calls between Davis and some inmates."There was an incident reported where he had gone to the jail and gotten a female prisoner out of the jail to take her to drug treatment," McManus said.Tnzrf Popup
