DETROIT ICONS SHINE: 4 leaders honored for commitment to region

Four civic leaders known for their passionate commitment to Detroit -- from the creation of landmark sports and entertainment venues to enterprises devoted to job training, entrepreneurship and community redevelopment -- were recognized Thursday with the inaugural Shining Light Regional Cooperation Awards.

The awards, named in honor of the late Free Press columnist, editor and publisher Neal Shine, were presented by the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition and the Free Press to Mike and Marian Ilitch, who turned their Little Caesars pizza company into a wide-ranging business empire that includes the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings and MotorCity Casino; former Detroit Pistons great, businessman and humanitarian Dave Bing, and activist Eleanor Josaitis, cofounder of the job training, social service and human rights organization Focus: HOPE.
