Two new head coaches began their careers at Culpeper County High School Monday when the basketball season opened with tryouts for both the boys' and girls' teams.

With the first games scheduled for Nov. 30, CCHS girls coach Mike McCombs and Blue Devils boys coach James Thompson each started working on the fundamentals and evaluating players after school. But neither first-year coach was ready to predict how the season might go, or even who might make the varsity squads.

McCombs had about 30 girls show up for the first day of tryouts and about 20 boys made their way to the CCHS gym to tryout for Thompson's squad. Thompson said that even though the Devils hadn't made it basic drills during the first day, he liked what he saw.
