Post-graduate students had expected to repay the sum after their

James Alexander, president of NUS Scotland, said: "It is disappointing that something that was supposed to help students is actually having the reverse effect for some.

"We are looking for the Scottish Government to reinstate the previous position and allow postgraduates to defer payment."

Claire Baker, Scottish Labour's spokeswoman for higher education, added: "The deferment to pay the graduate endowment was offered to students by the previous government to encourage them to carry on their studies as far as they could.

"In demanding full payment immediately, in some kind of final demand, the SNP has pulled the rug from under thousands of students who had budgeted to pay this years down the line."

A Scottish Government spokesman said the payment could be settled through a student loan which would see repayments start once an individual is earning more than 15,000.
