College Students Fend off Creditors

Kelly Walters, a junior at the University of Arkansas, was surprised when American Express called her cell phone recently soliciting her business."I don't know how they got my number because I have never signed up for a major credit card, despite hundreds of opportunities," Walters said. "My mailbox continually holds three to four offers a week, and I was recently flagged down while attending a career fair on campus."She's declined all offers.Walters' ability to say no to credit card issuers appears to be an exception among today's college students, according to the latest national study conducted by Nellie Mae.The study found 83 percent of the college juniors it surveyed had an average of four credit cards.Nellie Mae is a subsidiary of Sallie Mae -- the nation's largest provider of education funding through student loans.
