Merrill Shares Rise Amid Speculation O'Neal Will Go (Update5)

Oct. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Merrill Lynch & Co. surged the most in five years on speculation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stan O'Neal will be ousted and the world's biggest brokerage will become a takeover target.

Merrill climbed 8.5 percent to $66.09 in New York trading, the biggest increase since October 2002, after the New York Times reported that O'Neal discussed a possible merger with Wachovia Corp., angering his board. CNBC reported today that O'Neal told friends he'll probably be out of a job this weekend. Merrill's directors met today to discuss his potential departure, and may make a decision within the next two days, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

O'Neal, 56, lost the confidence of investors earlier this week after posting a $2.24 billion quarterly loss, the biggest in Merrill history and six times the amount the firm forecast just three weeks earlier.
