Province needs Arts for Children

The most heartening news emerging from the Mayor's Arts Award Lunch concerns a new $15,000 prize for a person or group that engages Toronto youth in the arts.

At yesterday's bash at the Four Seasons Hotel, the award and the cheque went to the most deserving possible winner you could imagine: Lola Rasminsky's marvellous Arts for Children organization.

As she noted in accepting the prize, those attending the lunch might have seen on their way in two little drummer girls greeting guests with their music. And for those kids, who live in the Keele and Eglinton area, getting involved in Arts for Children has been a life-changing breakthrough.

Discovering their creative talents can be a revolutionary experience for disadvantaged kids, especially if they have not been doing well in the standard school curriculum.
