Adopt if you can, say IOL readers

Increasing numbers of South African babies are reportedly leaving the country with foreigners who are being allowed to adopt them. Currently the number of foreigners wanting to adopt children outnumbers South Africans, especially when adoption across race is involved. This after the modernised Child Care Act of 1983 that has put in place guidelines for inter-country adoptions, thus sparking debate among children's groups. IOL has asked: "Should foreigners be allowed to adopt South African babies?" Of the 874 readers who responded to the question, 62 percent (544 votes) said Yes, with 8 percent (72 votes) saying No, while 30 percent (258 votes) do not care. Comments from readers: 36-0: To Vusi and Smanga, and now Siyabulela has also joined this group: What the 3 of you are proposing is "apartheid" on a global scale, where each race group must be left alone, and not be allowed to segregate or mix with others? Then why were you so opposed to apartheid, if you 3 want to propose separate development? Titinium_Duke: Jenny at 2007-09-18 12:38:35, as much as you want Vusi to stop blaming the previous government, I guess you should stop blaming the present government also.Index 3

High school theater troupe praised for staging controversial play

Three months after "The Laramie Project" made the West Park Players perhaps the most famous high school drama club in New Jersey, the spotlight shone on 32 young actors who, for a few hours Thursday night, transformed Ocean into that Wyoming town where as one character says "hate is not a value."

Fifteen minutes before curtain, drama coach Bob Angelini corraled the cast and crew into an industrial arts room off backstage and climbed on top of one of the work tables bolted into the floor.

There were some laughs at this feat, but that was more to do with the general sense of euphoria and nerves as the auditorium next door filled up with 400 to 500 audience members from all over the community.

"Here we are," Angelini said, as his cast looked up at him.Cause Of Lower Back Pain

Business likes lower costs, but budget not bold enough

The budget will reduce compliance costs and make it more efficient to do business, but was also criticised for not going far enough on tax cuts or helping exporters.

Business-focused initiatives in the budget included a new business reporting system, allowing PAYE payment once a month not twice, raising the filing threshold for fringe benefit tax, a higher threshold for GST registration, and cutting compliance costs on operations in Australia.

A lot of the areas had been bugbears for small businesses for years, said Ernst & Young director Alan Judge.

"I think what it will do is allow them to redirect resources into actively managing the business and generating earnings, rather than dealing with compliance costs," Mr Judge said.

A lot of small businesses were in partnerships, not incorporated, and would benefit from the personal income tax cuts.

Bear or Superbear? The new Draaisma-land

The lead time is much shorter, and often equity and economic recoveries are coincident, and sometimes economies bottom before equities do so. Patience is key. Today's message: indeed, this is consistent with our finding that one should be patient in bear markets as there is not much discounting of the upturn going on at the end of the bear market, after numerous failed rallies and false hopes (see Exhibits 9 and 10).

5. Times have changed, but most rules have not. Although times have changed dramatically over the last century, and economies have been functioning differently, while investors have arguably become more sophisticated, there are many common signs and characteristics at the bottom of bear markets.

6. Don't fight the Fed. When the Fed cuts rates and equities are cheap, you should buy.

Hoops time

Two new head coaches began their careers at Culpeper County High School Monday when the basketball season opened with tryouts for both the boys' and girls' teams.

With the first games scheduled for Nov. 30, CCHS girls coach Mike McCombs and Blue Devils boys coach James Thompson each started working on the fundamentals and evaluating players after school. But neither first-year coach was ready to predict how the season might go, or even who might make the varsity squads.

McCombs had about 30 girls show up for the first day of tryouts and about 20 boys made their way to the CCHS gym to tryout for Thompson's squad. Thompson said that even though the Devils hadn't made it basic drills during the first day, he liked what he saw.

"I like the turnout and I like the attitude," Thompson said.Trip To The Beach

Stock market plummets

NEW YORK - Wall Street suffered its second big drop in a week yesterday, with investors worried about fallout from the credit crisis at banks and a dollar that keeps getting weaker. The Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 360 points - just about matching its pullback of last Thursday. Investors worried about comments by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo concerning conflicts of interest in the mortgage industry that exacerbated declines among bank stocks. Oil hit a record, rising above $98 a barrel before retreating, and gold pushed higher. Those moves were made worse by an anemic dollar. The fear with a huge drop like yesterday's is that it is part not just of a correction, which is a 10 percent pullback in stock prices, but that it could be the beginning of a bear market. The Dow fell 360.92, or 2.64 percent, to 13,300.02.

Bands play Civil War music, teach history of an era still alive in lyrics

DECATUR, Ala. - With darkness settling over the battlefield and soldiers bedding down for the night, the familiar lyrics rose - music and voices blending from both Union and Confederate camps.

"'Mid pleasures and palaces though I may roam,

"Be it ever so humble there's no place like home!"

On more than one occasion during the Civil War, those words - from the prewar hit "Home, Sweet Home" - brought the two sides together, an impromptu and peaceful battle of the bands, if only for a few minutes.

For the bored and lonely men trying to while away the evenings, military bands provided much-needed comfort and entertainment.

Now several dozen bands around the United States perform music from the Civil War era - often on authentic instruments and in period attire - but not just to entertain.Infrared Sauna

Spirit was willing, but servers were weak

The Colorado Rockies offered a terse explanation for the ticket fiasco, saying only that the team and its fans had been victims of an "external malicious attack."

Computer experts late Monday were a lot more talkative.

Dave Bahr explained it this way: Imagine rush hour traffic is approaching downtown Denver, and someone with a sick sense of humor purposely sends "a whole bunch of cars out there and parks them on the highways" leading into the city, clogging the system.

Bahr, chairman of the computer science department at Regis University, calls it "a denial of service attack" that overloads the system.

Alek Komarnitsky, a Lafayette computer systems administrator, agreed that's a possibility. But he wondered about the Rockies explanation, saying in an e-mail "it certainly would be a convenient excuse for the problems today."

"A skeptic might wonder that perhaps they figured out the root cause of today's problem and figured this might be a way to come out smelling like a rose on it," he wrote.

How Great a Threat Were the Lackawanna Six?

Five years after the arrest of six young men from Lackawanna, N.Y., questions remain about whether the so-called "homegrown terrorists" are as dangerous as authorities initially suggested. The Jihad Next Door, a book by NPR's Dina Temple-Raston, explores the subject. Temple-Raston discusses the case against the Lackawanna Six with Steve Inskeep.

U.S. House passes Diwali resolution

Washington: The U.S. House of Representatives has for the first time passed a resolution recognising the "religious and historical significance" of Diwali.

The House Resolution 747, passed by an overwhelming vote of 358 to 0 (with 66 members abstaining), "is the first time the U.S. Congress has ever passed a resolution in honour of Diwali", said Joe Wilson, the co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans.

"I am pleased that this legislation recognising the religious and historical significance of the festival of Diwali, has been brought to the floor today for consideration," said the Republican. "Celebrated by the people of India, the Indian Diaspora and the nearly two million Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains in the U.S., Diwali is a five-day festival held in the fall that celebrates the values of kinship, knowledge, and goodness," said Mr.Business Network Consulting
