New Merrill CEO could face resistance

NEW YORK (AP) - When Merrill Lynch forced out Stan O'Neal as chief executive last month, its army of 16,000-plus stock brokers pushed hard to get one of their own in the executive suite. In new CEO John Thain, they got the opposite -- but some say he may be exactly what the brokers need to save their franchise.

Analysts acknowledge that some brokerage employees might see Thain as too similar to his predecessor, another CEO with a background in investment banking and trading. O'Neal is now blamed for damaging the company's reputation by getting too risky in the company's investment banking unit.

But, a new CEO that can correct the major deficiencies in the investment banking and fixed-income divisions can help resurrect the entire brand, Jeff Harte, senior brokerage analyst at Sandler O'Neill & Partners LP, said in an interview.
